Wild Poliovirus

▪ One new WPV1 case reported this week from Pakistan. The WPV1 case is from Islamabad province (ICT district), with date of onset on 17th August 2024. The WPV1 case count in 2024 to date is 35 (18 from Afghanistan and 17 from Pakistan). In 2023, the count remains 12 (6 each from Afghanistan and Pakistan).

▪ Fifteen new WPV1 positive environmental samples (ES) from Pakistan reported this week. The new ES are: 8 from Sindh province (7 from Karachi Towns – 2 from KhiSouth, and 1 each from KhiKeamari, KhiMalir, KhiOrgangi, KhiWest and KhiEast, and 1 from Kambar district), 4 from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province (1 each from Wazir South, Abottabad, Peshawar, and Tank districts), 1 each from Punjab province (Attock district), Balochistan province (Dukki district) and Islamabad province (ICT district), with samples’ collection dates between 13th – 19th August 2024. ES count to date in 2024 is 371 (66 from Afghanistan and 305 from Pakistan). In 2023, the count remains 188 (62 from Afghanistan and 126 from Pakistan).

Vaccine derived poliovirus (VDPV)

▪ No new VDPV isolates reported this week. The cVDPV2 case count in 2024 is 37 (33 from Yemen, 3 from Somalia, and 1 from Occupied Palestinian Territory). In 2023, the count remains 16 (8 each from Somalia and Yemen), while the count of cVDPV2 ES positives in 2024 to date is 19 (6 each from Yemen and Occupied Palestinian Territory, 3 from Somalia, and 2 each from Sudan and Egypt). In 2023, the count remains 41 (16 from Yemen, 11 from Egypt, 9 from Somalia, and 5 from Sudan).
