Highlights of the week
Wild Poliovirus
- No new Wild Poliovirus cases reported this week; The WPV1 cases count in 2023 remains to be 1 case from Pakistan while in 2022 the WPV1 cases count is 22 cases (2 from Afghanistan and 20 from Pakistan).
- One new WPV1 positive environmental sample reported this week in 2023 from Afghanistan. The new WPV1 ES was reported from Batikot district of Nangarhar province with sample collection date on 1st March 2023. Accordingly, in 2023 to date, the positive WPV1 ES count is 17 (14 in Afghanistan and 3 in Pakistan) while in 2022, the count remains to be 59 (22
in Afghanistan and 37 in Pakistan).
Vaccine derived poliovirus (VDPV)
- No new cVDPV isolates from human or environmental samples reported this week. The cVDPV2 cases count in 2023 remains to be 1 case from Somalia while the count in 2022 remains to be 168 cases (1 from Sudan, 5 from Somalia and 162 from Yemen).
- In 2022 to date, the positive cVDPV2 ES count remains to be 44 (1 in Sudan, 5 in Somalia, 6 in Egypt, 12 in Djibouti and 20 in Yemen) and no cVDPV ES reported in 2023.
- One new VDPV2 ES reported this week from Egypt. The ES was reported from Shark district, Alexandria province, with date of sample collection 27th February 2023.
