Highlights of the week
Wild Poliovirus
- Human Samples: No new Wild Poliovirus cases reported this week. The cases count in 2022 remains to be 22 cases (2 from Afghanistan and 20 from Pakistan). No human cases reported in 2023
- Environmental Samples (ES): Afghanistan reported two new WPV1 positive ES this week, one from each of Jalabad and Batikot districts of Nangarhar Province. The specimens’ collection dates are on 1st and 2nd February 2023 respectively. In 2023 to date; the positive WPV1 ES count is 11 (9 in Afghanistan and 2 in Pakistan) while in 2022, the count remains to be 59 (22
in Afghanistan and 37 in Pakistan).
Circulating Vaccine derived poliovirus (cVDPV)
- Human Cases: One new cVDPV2 case in 2022 was reported from Yemen. The case is from Al Zuhra district of Al Hudaidah province, with a date of onset on 14th December 2022. The cVDPV2 count in 2022 to date is 167 from; Sudan (1); Somalia (5); and Yemen (161).
- Environmental Samples (ES): No new cVDPV2 positive environmental samples reported this week.
- In 2022 to date; the positive ES samples’ count is 43 from; Sudan (1); Somalia (4); Egypt (6); Djibouti (12); and Yemen (20).
Regional activities
- A WHO/EMRO technical support visit for surveillance and certification took place from 12-16 February 2023 in Kuwait.
