Highlights
- Humanitarian needs remain high. Over 50 per cent of the population require humanitarian assistance in 2025 – 22.9 million people, including 12 million children. This is the second highest number of people in need in the world.
- Political developments in neighbouring Pakistan have exacerbated the risk of a returnee crisis, which peaked in the last quarter of 2023. By 26 April 2025, nearly 1 million Afghans had returned, and nearly two-thirds are children.
- In April, more than 5.8 million people accessed essential health services through UNICEF-supported static health facilities and 16 mobile health and nutrition teams.
- In April, more than 1 million children were screened for wasting, of whom more than 43,000 (58 per cent girls) were referred for outpatient treatment.
