Terre des hommes activities in Afghanistan - Facts and Figures

Maternal health
Between January and December 2002, the teams of Terre des hommes (Tdh) Mother-Child-Health project in Kabul visited 11'569 houses in search for women in need. 28'382 home visits were made to provide midwifery services to mothers and pregnant women. 84'399 women participated in health education in their homes and 4'046 babies entered the program.

Between October and December 2002, the teams of Terre des hommes' (Tdh) newly established Mother-Child-Health project in Kandahar visited 2'126 houses in search for mothers in need. 1'644 home visits were made to provide midwifery services to mothers and pregnant women. 6'672 mothers participated in health education in their homes.

Between January and December last year, 25'600 women and children were treated in Terre des hommes' (Tdh) MCH clinic in Rustaq, Takhar province, and 705 malnourished children treated and recovered.

Street children

The ASCHIANA street children project in Kabul assessed from March to May the needs of street working children begging and working in the streets of the capital city. A total number of 37'284 children have been identified. From January to December around 2000 street children received protection, nutrition, basic education, training, health and health education in the five drop-in centres in the capital city.

From March to December the Terre des hommes (Tdh) Peshawar Street Children Project provided indoor services to 180 Afghan refugee children focusing on protection, nutrition, basic education, training, health and health education. In addition 400 more street children have been included in outdoor services focusing on street animation and street education.

Child health:

From January to December the vaccination teams of Terre des hommes (Tdh) in Rustaq, Takhar province vaccinated five times in each round 40'932 children in 173 villages against polio as part of NID. The same teams immunized in two rounds each time 38'286 children in 173 villages against measles. 21'137 children have been immunized against six killer diseases through routine EPI programs in Rustaq.

Education:

From January to December Terre des hommes (Tdh) in Rustaq constructed two primary schools, rehabilitated three simple primary school buildings in villages, rehabilitated the old girls and boys high school in Rustaq town, and constructed a new high school building for girls. Salaries for 127 teachers are paid to accommodate 5685 school children from grade 1 to grade 12 in seven primary schools, three village schools (grade I to grade III), two middle schools and two high schools in Rustaq district. The enrolment figure of girls is nearly 40%.

Water & sanitation

The field engineers of Terre des hommes (Tdh) in Rustaq constructed 11 water reservoirs, and connected 11 villages with fresh and safe water supply. In addition latrines were built for eight school buildings.

Transportation

The field engineers of Terre des hommes (Tdh) constructed a new airstrip in Rustaq with the aim to provide easy access to a vulnerable population and to serve the needs of other humanitarian organisations in the region.

Emergency intervention:

From December 2001 to February 2002 Terre des hommes (Tdh) provided food and non-food relief to more than 2000 families in Kabul.

From January to February 2002 Terre des hommes (Tdh) provided emergency food aid to 2000 families in Rustaq district.
