On 3 August, heavy rains resulted in flash floods and high levels of water in 13 villages namely Kase hussainkhail, Sar Cheney, Loy Kalay, Mirza Khane/Mirza Khane Safla, Labe Darya, Sharak (center town), Kasoona De Send Pora Ghara, Aheengaran, Dreesare, Doobi Kalay, Hootkhail, Khawaja Se Baba and Teezan villages of Surobi district of Kabul province.

A joint rapid needs assessment was carried out in four villages by the ANDMA Kabul, DoRRD, IOM and ARCS on 3 August 2013. In light of the large area to cover and inaccessibility due to insecurity, the remaining nine villages are being assessed today, 4 August. The team consists of IOM, ARCS, CARE, WFP/AREA and various government departments, including ANDMA and DoRRD.

The Afghan National Army (ANA) helicopter was deployed on 3 August for search and rescue support, in which 40 persons were rescued.

As of 4 August, according to the DDA and IOM and based on an assessment of six villages1; 42 people died (23 confirmed deaths by IOM), 21 persons are still missing (IOM), six injured (DDA), 426 houses were completely destroyed (IOM), 17 houses were moderately damaged (IOM), 832 livestock were washed away (DDA), 600 acre land were badly affected (DDA), 27,120 fruit trees and 2110 meter protection wall were completely destroyed (DDA). In addition, four mosques were damaged or destroyed; four schools (two girls and two boys) were destroyed (two) or damaged (two); and, the Surobi 20-bed hospital was flooded and the surrounding wall collapsed (IOM). The emergency room was cleaned and is now able to receive patients.
