Statement on reported DFA directive to block women and girls from attending private medical institutes [EN/Dari/PS]

Kabul, 4 December 2024: The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) is extremely concerned about a reported directive of the de facto authorities preventing women and girls from attending classes at private medical institutions.

UNAMA continues to verify these reports through official channels and has not so far received formal confirmation.

If implemented, the reported directive poses further restrictions on women and girls’ rights to education and access to healthcare. Ultimately, it will have a detrimental impact on Afghanistan’s healthcare system and on the country’s development.

UNAMA urges the de facto authorities to reconsider implementing the reported directive in view of its negative implications on the lives of Afghan women and girls and all people across the country.
