CRISIS IN NUMBERS

• 24.4 million people, including 13 million children need humanitarian assistance (HRP 2022)
• 97% of Afghans are at risk of falling below the poverty line this year (UNDP)
• 18.9 million people (9.2 million children) are projected to face emergency or crisis food insecurity between June and November 2022. (IPC - June-Nov 2022)
• 1.1 million children under five are acutely malnourished (HRP 2022)
• 5.8 million internally displaced people and returnees remain in some form of displacement – close to 700,0000 people were internally displaced in 2021. (IOM and March-November 2022-IPC)
• 8 million children need support to access education in Afghanistan (HRP 2022)
• 10 million children are at risk of dropping out of school if teacher salaries are not paid and crippling poverty levels continue - (UNICEF)
• 4.5 million children are in need mental health and psychosocial support - (UNICEF)

SITUATION UPDATES

• Several eastern, western, southern, south-eastern, and central provinces of Afghanistan have witnessed heavy rain and flash floods. The rain destroyed and damaged at least 1,206 houses and caused disruption to livelihood through destruction of crops and agricultural land. Between 24th Jul and 1st August, flash floods have reportedly killed 39 and injured 16 people.
• Afghanistan’s current economic crisis risks erasing development gains achieved over the past two decades. Emerging economic conditions pose grave poverty, displacement, and fragility risks to Afghanistan, the region, and the world. Economic stabilization and recovery will require decisive action by the IEA administration and the international community.
• Afghanistan continue to face insufficient food consumption, as 92% of households struggle to meet their food needs. In addition, rising inflation in food prices and shrinking household income, have led half of the population to employ crisis-level coping strategies for meeting their basic needs.
• The country is also facing outbreaks of several infectious diseases like Acute Watery Diarrhoea, Measles, COVID-19, Dengue Fever and etc. Total 118,837 AWD, 65,470 Measles cases, 77 dengue fever cases and 190,767 COVID cases have been reported till date.
• In July, conflict related displacement was increased, especially in Bamyan and Sar-e-Pul provinces. At least 27,000 people were temporarily displaced. According to the latest population movement snapshot, total 28.9K people have been newly displaced in 2022, 482.3K people returned from Iran and 46.3K people have returned from Pakistan in 2022.
