SITUATION

1. ON 24 AND 25 MARCH 1993, AVALANCHES HIT MOUNTAIN VILLAGES IN NORTHERN PAKISTAN. IN GULTAR SITUATED 720 KM FROM GILGIT IN KARAKORAM MOUNTAINS ON BORDER WITH CHINA, EIGHT PEOPLE REPORTED KILLED AND THREE SERIOUSLY INJURED. IN THALESTAL VILLAGES NEAR CHOTA DEOSAI, SKARDU DISTRICT, 16 PEOPLE WERE KILLED AND 5 INJURED. HEAVY LOSS TO PROPERTY ALSO REPORTED. GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS VISITED AFFECTED AREAS AND DISTRIBUTED RELIEF. UN/DHA RESIDENT COORDINATOR WHO IS MONITORING SITUATION WILL PROVIDE UPDATED INFORMATION AS REQUIRED.

2. ON 21 MARCH 1993, AVALANCHES HIT THE HINDU KUSH MOUNTAINS IN AFGHANISTAN CUTTING OFF THE SALANG PASS, THE MAIN HIGHWAY LINKING KABUL WITH NORTHERN AFGHANISTAN. VEHICLES WERE TRAPPED IN SNOW AND ICE AND AN UNCONFIRMED NUMBER OF DEATHS OCCURRED. NATIONAL AUTHORITIES EVACUATED PASSENGERS. FEEDING AND SHELTER CENTRES ESTABLISHED. UNICEF AND SEVERAL NGOS UNDERTOOK MISSION TO THE AREA CARRYING SUPPLIES OF FOOD, CLOTHING AND MEDICINES. NO FURTHER INTERNATIONAL ASSISTANCE REQUIRED.
