Netherlands assists elections in Afghanistan

The Netherlands is to contribute an extra four million euros to assist the electoral process in Afghanistan. The money, which comes on top of a previous contribution of four million euros, will pay for logistical support in the elections to be held next month.

The money will be spent via the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to finance the organisation of elections to be held on 18 September for 249 members of the lower house of the Afghan parliament and members of the 34 new provincial councils. The total election budget is 123 million euros.

It will pay for logistical preparations such as the creation of thousands of polling stations around the country, information for voters, and the provision of national and international election observers. The UNDP will also help candidates get fair access to the media.

Afghanistan is a partner country in Dutch development cooperation. In January 2004, the country adopted a new constitution, and in October 2004, the first democratic presidential election was held. The voter turnout was high and the election went smoothly. This year's elections represent an important new step in the democratisation process.
