After almost half a century of warfare
and hardships, the educational system in Afghanistan is in complete disarray.
There are not enough schools or teachers, and enrollment, particularly
for girls, is staggeringly low.
This project, implemented by Aga Khan
Foundation U.S.A. works with Afghan communities to help them meet the challenge
of reconstructing the educational system. The project will enroll thousands
of children into school and will rehabilitate existing schools. Special
emphasis will be placed on improving the quality of instruction. The Foundation
will train teachers by upgrading the skills of existing teachers and providing
quality training to new teachers. With a focus on supporting girls' education,
female teachers will be recruited from local villages. To further support
this effort, a women's hostel will be constructed at the Teacher Training
College in Pul-e-Khumry. The on-site accommodations will provide a safe
and supportive environment to the young women, particularly those from
rural areas, while they participate in teacher training. By training more
female teachers, girls in Afghanistan will receive even more opportunity
to attend - and stay - in school.
