Executive Summary
In September 2023, Afghanaid field staff conducted a needs assessment, which served to shed light on the assistance needs in Faizabad, Yaftal Sufla, Khash, and Jurm districts of Badakhshan province and Ashteraly, Shahristan and Miramor districts of Daykundi province. The assessment was conducted in close collaboration with the affected communities and through key informants in districts which were identified as high priority areas due to their high concentration of vulnerable households and low levels of assistance provided.
Through a mixed methods approach including KIIs and FGDs, this assessment sought to provide the framework for the proposed WASH response project in the target districts of Badakhshan and Daykundi provinces. The primary objective of the needs assessment was to gain a holistic understanding of the multifaceted challenges, particularly related to WASH, that are currently confronting communities, in order to enable us to design our project activities in a highly targeted and effective manner in the communities with the most urgent WASH assistance needs.
The assessment was conducted between 7-10 September 2023, and through an analysis of the one-onone discussions that were held with community members, the assessment found that the most urgent need of participants during the winter season is access to safe and sufficient water for drinking, while their current main WASH need is hygiene awareness and supplies.
Considering the needs of the targeted communities, the lack of good quality hygiene items and water kits in local markets, and based on the direct observations from the field, Afghanaid is recommending that the best and most effective modality to address urgent WASH needs is in-kind WASH assistance in Faizabad Yaftal, Khash, and Jurm districts of Badakhshan province, and Ashteraly, Shahristan and Miramor districts of Daykundi province.
