Karzai calls for coalition, neighbours support for Afghan elections

Kabul (dpa) - Afghan President Hamid Karzai on Tuesday called for crucial cooperation from U.S.-led coalition forces and Afghanistan's neighbours for its upcoming parliamentary elections.

"The cooperation from coalition forces and our neighbours was crucial for the presidential election last October and we hope similar collaboration will ensure the parliamentary elections take place in a secure environment,'' Karzai said in a presidential statement.

According to the statement, Karzai brought up this issue while meeting General John Abizaid, Commander of U.S. Central Command. Abizaid was in Kabul to visit the Afghan National Army headquarters.

Afghanistan is scheduled to hold its first parliamentary election on September 18 after nearly three decades of armed conflict.

Members of the ousted Taliban regime in recent months have accelerated attacks against Afghan and U.S. troops, mainly in the country's south and south-east. dpa km mga
