Japan’s Emergency Assistance to the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan in Response to the Landslides Disaster

  1. On Sunday, May 4, the Government of Japan decided to provide emergency relief goods worth 11 million yen (tents, blankets, and sleeping pads) to the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in response to the request from the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan following serious damage from the landslides in the country.

  2. In Badakhshan province, northern Afghanistan, landslides crashed down on May 2, supposedly set out by heavy rain since April 24. The local authorities reported, as of May 3, about 500 people were dead and approximately 2,000 people were missing. The landslides also caused property damages such as over 250 crushed houses.

  3. In response to the request from the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, the Government of Japan has decided to provide emergency assistance from a humanitarian point of view for the victims as well as in light of friendly relations between Japan and Afghanistan.
