Abstract:
Monitoring and Evaluation. Accountability and Learning (MEAL) unit of Islamic Relief -Afghanistan conducted a rapid need assessment survey to identify and address the ongoing food security and livelihood situation of the people Seyouri and Tarnak districts of Zabul province and Panjwayee district of Kandahar province.
The objectives were to measure food security, identify beneficiary needs, assess existing support mechanisms, determine effective local methods, and understand support expectations. The survey used a mixed-method approach, with a sample size of 420 households and qualitative data from key informant interviews. Findings showed a predominance of male-headed households, limited formal education, and a high prevalence of food shortage and hunger. Most households were unable to meet basic food needs without assistance and lacked awareness of support programs. Coping strategies included borrowing money and reducing meal quantity. The most needed support types were food and livelihood assistance. Communities faced barriers in accessing support, and drought was the most common disaster experienced. This executive summary highlights the urgent need for targeted interventions and coordination among organizations to address the food security and livelihood challenges faced by the affected communities in the selected districts.
