Military operations in Pakistan’s North Waziristan Agency (NWA) have displaced tens of thousands of families on both sides of the Afghanistan-Pakistan border. The majority of the families have been displaced into Afghanistan’s Khost and Paktika ,provinces. IOM is responding to the needs of Afghan families who have returned from North Waziristan. On 17 August 30 Afghan families (233 individuals) displaced from North Waziristan were assessed in Kabul province. All of the families .identified Kabul as their province of origin
IOM organized a distribution for 123 vulnerable displaced Afghan families in Khost province on 7 September. The families were selected based on their needs from five districts in Khost (Matoon, Gurbuz, Tani, Nadershah, and Mandozi). Each family received an IOM non-food items (NFI) kit with basic household relief supplies as well as a hygiene kit and food. The Afghan Directorate of Refugees and Repatriation (DoRR) and other UN/NGO partners were present at the distribution
When interviewed following the distribution, the beneficiary families emphasized their need for basic household supplies such as sleeping mats and blankets, and their appreciation for receiving these items. The families also expressed a continued .need for insulated shelters and other winterization supplies as the weather begins to cool.
IOM has appealed for an additional USD 912,970 through the Afghanistan Refugee Response Plan in order to continue providing assistance for vulnerable displaced families including protection services, relief supplies, shelters and onward transportation to the families’ province of origin or other desired destination. Support for IOM’s current response activities .has been provided by the Government of Japan.
