SHARP RISE IN RETURNS FROM IRAN
SITUATION OVERVIEW
The security and humanitarian landscape at the Afghanistan–Iran border continues to evolve rapidly amid ongoing regional tensions. Since June 13, 2025, the intensification of hostilities between Iran and Israel—including direct U.S. military strikes on Iranian nuclear sites and retaliatory missile launches by Iran—has introduced new volatility into cross-border dynamics. Although a ceasefire has since been declared and active hostilities have reportedly ceased, movements across the border between Iran and Afghanistan at the Islam Qala and Milak crossings continue to increase. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has recorded approximately 6,000–7,000 individuals crossing daily—nearly double the usual volume. In the past few days, the number has reached 30,000 per day
