On 20 August 2024, heavy rains triggered flash floods which swept through Panjshir, Parwan, Kabul, Nangarhar and Kunar province in the eastern and central regions of Afghanistan. The incident affected a total of 1,006 families comprising 6,589 individuals, especially in Jalalabad and Kabul where the highest number of affected populations and damaged shelters were reported.

In coordination with ESNFI cluster, the de-facto authorities from the Afghanistan National Disaster Management Authority (ANDMA) and other humanitarian partners, IOM deployed teams to conduct multi sector rapid assessments at the affected provinces. The initial assessment report shows that over 1,000 shelters were either damaged or destroyed. Most of the affected families whose shelters have become uninhabitable, most of them (172 households) are currently residing in informal settlements, followed by 92 households residing with host families or relatives. The highest number of individuals vulnerable to protection risks is recorded in Jalalabad, Nangarhar (55 individuals), followed by Kabul (20 individuals). Seventeen per cent of the surveyed populations showed visible signs of malnutrition, while 46 per cent reported not having money for food. A total of 981 households reported having lost their food stock, while there were also reports of lost livestock and damaged agricultural land.

Additional assessments are currently ongoing in Kunar and Laghman province.

Prior to this incident, the eastern, northeastern, central, and southern regions of Afghanistan were also impacted by heavy weather conditions and floods occurring between 15 July and 4 August 2024, affecting 929 households across 10 provinces.
