Abstract

Violence against women in Afghanistan has always been prevalent. However, under the previous regime, there were specific legal and social structures that provided a safety net for women to report gender-based violence (GBV). The needs of GBV survivors were addressed through a range of specialized services aimed at protecting and supporting them both legally and socially. Since the Taliban's takeover of Afghanistan in August 2021 and the subsequent establishment of the Taliban De Facto Authority (DFA), the legal and social structures in Afghanistan that once provided some form of safety net for women has collapsed, and in this state of uncertainty, there is no sufficient legal avenue for GBV survivors to obtain their rights
