Background Information on the emergency
1.1. Description of disaster
A M5.9 earthquake hit the southeastern region of Afghanistan on 22 June, leading to wide-scale destruction across already vulnerable districts in Paktika and Khost provinces.
1.2. Impact
According to the World Health Organization, in Spera District (Khost Province, eastern Afghanistan), 1,039 people have died, 2,949 people have been injured and 4,500 houses have been partially or fully damaged across Paktika and Khost Provinces. The most affected districts are Giyan, Barmal and Ziruk Districts in Paktika Province, and Spera in Khost Province.
2. Deployment Request and Objectives
2.1. The request for an UNDAC deployment and its context
In consultation with OCHA Afghanistan Country Office (CO) a small UNDAC team (four people) are requested to deploy to Afghanistan for up to four weeks to support the following areas: Information Management, Field Coordination, Reporting, and ICT. Team members are to be integrated into CO and operate in the affected areas to augment OCHA response capacity. CO Field coordinator was appointed as UNDAC team leader to ensure the UNDAC members integration to the OCHA response support.
2.2. Mission Objectives
The preliminary Terms of Reference in direct support of OCHA Afghanistan CO are as follows:
• To assist in the production of various written reports, documents, and communications
• To provide coordination support to specialist international coordination teams
• To support establishing information management system and IT to enable actors to communicate, collaborate and share information.
