Wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1)

Cases: No new WPV-1 positive cases reported this week. In total, 39 WPV1-positive cases have been confirmed in 2025 (9 from Afghanistan and 30 from Pakistan in 2025).

Environment: Three new WPV-1-positive environmental samples reported from Pakistan this week. The newly reported WPV-1-positive environmental samples are: 1 each from Sindh province (Karachi Central Town), from Gilgit Baltistan province (Gilgit district), from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province (Wazir-South Lower district), with collection dates between 7 – 24 October 2025. In total, 629 WPV1-positive environmental samples have been reported in 2025 (64 from Afghanistan and 565 from Pakistan).

Vaccine-derived poliovirus (VDPV)

Cases:

• cVDPV2:No new cVDPV2 cases reported this week. The cVDPV2 case count in 2025 to date is 33 (29 from Yemen, 2 from Sudan, and 1 each from Djibouti and Somalia)

• VDPV2: Five new VDPV2 cases from Sudan reported this week. Four cases are from Kassala province (3 from Kassala Town and 1 from Rifi West Kassala district) and one case from North Kordofan (Bara district) with onset dates between 12th August to 8th October 2025.

Environment:

• cVDPV1:One new cVDPV1 isolate from Djibouti was reported this week. The newly cVDPV1-positive environmental sample is from Djibouti province/district (Arhiba site) with collection date on 18th May 2025. The cVDPV1 was confirmed from 10 environmental samples in 2025 to date (all from Djibouti).

• cVDPV2: No new cVDPV2 isolates were reported this week. The cVDPV2 was confirmed in 40 sewage water samples in 2025 (17 from Djibouti, 9 from Yemen, 7 from occupied Palestinian territory, 6 from Somalia, and 1 from Sudan).

• VDPV3: One new VDPV3 isolate from Somalia was reported this week. The newly VDPV3-positive environmental sample is from Bay province, Baidoa district, with collection date on 20th August 2025.
