Appeal Number: 6975
Appeal Amount: $768,895
SITUATION: Heavy rains and melting snowfall have caused river levels in Afghanistan and Pakistan to raise enormously in recent months - and the threat of early monsoons have also created a threat to these two southern Asian nations.
In Afghanistan, 51 persons in 12 central, northeastern and eastern provinces have perished and at least 4,000 families have been affected - 2,364 homes have been destroyed and more than 4,000 animals needed for the livelihood of families have also died, according to the Afghan government.
One of the worst affected regions is the northern province of Badakhshan, one of the country's most remote and poverty-stricken areas. There, more than 1,600 acres of land have been laid to waste and thousands of livestock were killed - having a devastating effect on people who already live with a great deal of food insecurity.
In neighboring Pakistan - a densely-populated country already vulnerable to floods, droughts, earthquakes and cyclonic storms - flood waters have damaged or destroyed thousands of homes and laid to waste vast tracts of agricultural land in the low- lying areas of the Peshawar, Charsadda and Nowshera districts. The worst-affected areas are Tapu Koroona, Sheikhabad and Jala Bela in the Peshawer district, the site of the confluence of several major rivers. In addition to destroying homes, flooding has destroyed crops in low-lying areas and killed livestock.
