Supported by the Comité Interministériel sur l'Aide Alimentaire (CIAA) and the Embassy of France in Afghanistan, the non-governmental organization Mission d'Aide au Développement des Economies Rurales - Afghanistan (MADERA) is currently implementing a Food Aid project aiming to assist the population of flood-affected areas of Wardak province, Afghanistan, to cover part of their basic food needs and thereby prevent further deterioration of their food security situation.
According to a Food Security and Needs Assessment conducted by MADERA in November 2009 in the districts of Behsud I & Behsud II of Wardak province, the food security situation in these districts remains extremely unstable in spite of the good rainfall in 2009. These same areas experienced severe flooding in April and May 2010, which damaged vital irrigation infrastructure, houses, roads and land. The flooding exacerbated the already poor food security situation in these districts and the risk of a humanitarian crisis.
The relief effort funded by the Comité Interministériel sur l'Aide Alimentaire and the Embassy of France will reach a total of 1,440 beneficiaries. Through implementing Food-for-Work activities to repair vital irrigation infrastructure and to construct other for further protection against climate risks, the project will also ensure farmers can grow sufficient food in 2011.
MADERA was founded in 1988 with the purpose of improving the quality of life of the people of Afghanistan and fostering the conditions necessary for peace. Its actions are oriented towards empowering rural communities by building their capacities and supporting their initiatives, with the aim of giving them greater control over their own development.
The Embassy of France supports relief efforts in Afghanistan and also funds longer-term development initiatives which build the capacity of Afghans to rebuild their country.
