Avalanches In Badakhshan Situation Report No. 2

I. HIGHLIGHTS/KEY PRIORITIES

  1. The provincial governor has reiterated that the situation is improving and the local population having coping mechanisms for avalanches which are a regular feature in Badakhshan during the winter.

  2. Local authorities and the humanitarian community are exploring strategies to facilitate assessments in the affected areas

  3. The MoD is planning to send two helicopters to Arghanj-Khaw to recover 15 persons affected by extreme cold temperatures and in need of medical treatment.

  4. ANDMA has stated that it lacks helicopter fuel to effect more assessments using MoD helicopters.

  5. Given the very heavy snowfalls, preparations must commence in earnest for landslides and flooding which is likely to take place between February and May.
