AFGHANISTAN

Severe weather conditions during the first half of January 2025 have included storms, heavy snowfall and rain leading to multiple fatalities across the northern and eastern regions of Afghanistan. In Kunar, Laghman, and Nuristan provinces, heavy rainfall and snowfall on 2 January damaged homes and triggered road traffic accidents on the Kabul-Jalalabad Highway resulted in five people killed and 17 injured. In Faryab Province, extreme temperatures in Kohistan District on 4 January led to two deaths, while in Baghlan Province, heavy snowfall and extreme cold claimed three lives in Andarab District, as of 5 January. In collaboration with local authorities, the UN and humanitarian partners are actively assessing the localized needs of affected families and are prioritizing the delivery of essential assistance to communities in affected areas.

MYANMAR

Fighting in Rakhine State has escalated, with civilians bearing the brunt of the conflict. On 8 January, an aerial attack in Kyauk Ni Maw Village, Ramree Township, reportedly killed over 40 civilians, including women and children, and injured more than 20 people. Approximately 500 homes were allegedly destroyed. Civilians in Rakhine face extreme risks, acute food insecurity, and a near total collapse of critical public services. The humanitarian community calls for all parties to uphold international humanitarian law and ensure the protection of civilians and unimpeded humanitarian access.
