NATO has deployed four additional F16 aircraft to Afghanistan, significantly enhancing the air power of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF).
The Belgian fighters, from the 1st Squadron based at Florennes Airbase, arrived at Kabul International Airport on 12 July.
They will reinforce the four Dutch F-16s currently in service with ISAF, and perform a wide range of tasks.
Support for elections
Their presence will also contribute to increasing security ahead of the landmark parliamentary and provincial elections scheduled in Afghanistan for 18 September.
NATO will assist Afghan authorities in providing security for the elections. This will include the deployment of additional three battalions to Afghanistan, as well as a quick reaction force and an 'over-the-horizon' force.
