An humanitarian convoy travelled from Kabul
across the front lines to deliver some 70 tonnes of aid to 65,000 displaced
persons in the Panjshir Valley, the United Nations Office for the Coordination
of Humanitarian Affairs in Afghanistan reported today.
The permission to cross the front lines
came after six weeks of talks on humanitarian access to the Panjshir Valley
by the UN with the Taliban and the opposition Northern Alliance.
The UN had set up a joint committee comprising representatives of the Taliban and the Northern Alliance to plan this operation in a rare example of cooperation.
