PURPOSE AND SCOPE:
This Market monitoring was conducted from the month of July 2017 on weekly bases. This document presents the market prices monitoring during the CBI activities. The work relied on the collection of primary data through 12 structured interviews with traders and three FGDs with targeted communities.
The rapid market assessment seek to assess whether the markets are functioning or are likely to recover quickly, if beneficiaries will be able to buy what they need locally and at reasonable prices, whether there is a risk of inflation (due to external factors) and if the cash transfer could cause or contribute to localized inflation.
This study aims to identify: 1) the essential food/non-food items are availability in the market, 2) accessibility of money transfer systems, 3) trends of major commodities and food prices in local markets,
4) clarify threats, risks and vulnerabilities to the market functionality, 5) whether markets are accessible and safe to access. These information support decisions on program design, including the type and degree of cash transfer programming appropriate to the context.
To understand the capacity of the markets to absorb the additional supply of cash and demand for food in light of the scope of cash based intervention in Lashkargah city.
To understand the market functionality and capacity to contribute to meeting survival and NFI needs of targeted households and communities in Lashkargah city of Helmand province.
To draw out from the analysis a set of response recommendations on how to mitigate the likely obstacles and barriers to the target group accessing the markets and adjust the CBI modality.
The market monitoring has focused on targeted areas of Lashkargah city of Helmand Province as part of its CBI intervention for prolonged IDPs household. Bazar area selected as markets located to the close proximity of the targeted area and the project beneficiaries had access to these markets for fulfilling their food and NFI needs.
