Afghanistan: Tribal elders and Ulema in Kapisa pledge support to disbandment of illegal armed groups (DIAG)

Kabul, 30 July 2008 - On Wednesday 30th July, the Afghanistan's New Beginnings Programme (ANBP) organized a Workshop for Tribal Elders and Religious Scholars in Support of Disbandment of Illegal Armed Groups (DIAG).

The aim of this workshop was to disseminate relevant information on DIAG among the elders and local community in Kapisa Province and to expedite the implementation of DIAG and the Gun Law with support of the Tribal Elders. Support of communities, Mullahs as well as commanders are also being actively enlisted for the initiative.

Over 100 Tribal Elders attended the workshop, which took place at the Governor's office Mahmood Raqi center of Kapisa Province. Speakers included His Excellency, Gholam Ghaws Abubaker, the Governor of Kapisa Province who opened the seminar, Bakht Beg Mirzada, Legal and Governance Officer of Joint Secretariat, Mawlawi Gul Mohammad, Head of Kapisa Ulama's Council, Aminullah Muzafari, First Secretary of Senate and Haji Iqbal, head of Defence Commission in Parliament.

The Tribal workshop emphasized the positive effect of DIAG on communities and underlined the government and donors' ability to commit increasing assistance to areas which have become safe, secure and free of arms.

The Workshop is a part of the people-centred initiatives launched throughout Afghanistan to develop a better understanding of DIAG on how the process will benefit communities through the compliance of commanders.
