As of 30 June, 949,000 Afghans have returned to Afghanistan in 2025, including 741,000 from Iran and 208,000 from Pakistan. With the recent escalation in hostilities between Israel and Iran, the number of Afghans returning from Iran has increased significantly. Some 283,000 Afghans returned from Iran in June alone. As political tensions and anti-Afghan sentiment increase, the profile of returnees from Iran has shifted, with families now comprising over 60 per cent, contrasting with predominantly single males in previous waves. These returns continue to put pressure on already vulnerable host communities, straining limited services and markets in areas of return and increasing the risk of social tensions over competition for scarce resources.
