Afghanistan: Phase IV of DIAG district implementation launched

D&RC Targets another 12 Districts for Disbandment of Illegal armed Groups and Development

Kabul -24 July 2008 - On 24 July 2008, the Disarmament and Reintegration Commission (D&RC) officially launched the DIAG District Implementation (DDI) Phase 4, supported by UNDP Project called Afghanistan's New Beginnings Programme (ANBP).

The first, second and third rounds of DDI are ongoing in 70 districts nationwide. In all, DDI 4 will target 12 districts in the provinces of Samangan, Kunduz, Takhar, Badakhshan, Panjshir, Herat, Badghis, Nangarhar and Khost.

As a result of the DDI initiative, out of the 70 districts targeted so far, 37 districts have complied so far. As many as 342 Illegal Armed Groups (IAGs) have been disbanded through DIAG. Furthermore, as part of the reintegration support under DIAG, 44 Development projects are at different stages of planning implementation in different parts of the country.

DIAG aims at eradicating the influence of illegal armed groups in Afghanistan, thus allowing the consolidation of peace, rule of law and prosperity in the country. By voluntarily surrendering their weapons, disbanding or severing links with armed groups, ex-commanders and government officials linked with these groups will demonstrate their support to the Government to build a safe and prosperous Afghanistan.

The DIAG process was launched on 11 June 2005 when officially announced by Vice President Khalili. As of 23 July 2008, 40,571 weapons as well as 33, 079 pieces of boxed and unboxed ammunition have been handed over to and verified by ANBP collection teams in Afghanistan.
