Between 15 September 2023 and 30 April 2025, over 998,500 Afghans have returned from Pakistan. In the same period, UNHCR has assisted over 131,100 Afghan returnees from Pakistan, including 82,600 Proof of Registration (PoR) Card holders. Approximately 50 percent of the assisted individuals are women and girls, and 2.4 percent of the total assisted beneficiaries have disabilities. Of households assisted in the same period, at least one in four are headed by women, and approximately 72 percent of returnees from Pakistan intend to return to five provinces (Nangarhar, Kabul, Kandahar, Kunduz, Laghman). Out of 998,500, over 196,253 returned in 2025 out of which 33,300 were deported. The majority (over 144,500 individuals) returned in April including 29,900 deportations which represent 42% of all deportations since 15 September 2023, surpassing November 2023 levels. Some 1,000 were deported in January, 1,417 in February, and 694 in March. Additionally, during January and April 2025, close to 435,000 individuals returned from Iran including 252,400 deportations. Since 20 March 2025 over 170,200 have returned, out of which 97,000 (57%) have been deported. Similarly, since 1 January 2025, over 438,800 people have returned from Iran out of which 252,400 of them were deported.
