BACKGROUND
WHAT: On 23 November 2024, heavy rainfall and subsequent flash floods severely impacted several districts in Kunduz, Baghlan, and Balkh provinces.
WHERE: 1) Kunduz province: Ali Abad (Lala Maidan 1–4) and Khan Abad (Khan Abad City, Dehwiran/Zahid Village, and Sil Bord Mullah Karim) districts.
2) Baghlan province: Center Baghlan district (Kocchenar, Mangal, Sangtal, and Hofeano villages) .
3) Balkh province: Sholgara district (Mohammad Karim Village, Naw Abad Starkot, and Tajik Eltan villages)
IMPACT
- Human Casualties: One 10-month-old boy died (martyred) and the mother was injured in Zahid village due to the flood). Additionally, one 1-year-old girl died in Sari Dawra area.
- Affected Households: Approximately 460 houses, including Madrasas and Mosques (with carpets, blankets, and NFIs), have been destroyed.
- Poultry Losses: Three poultry farms, each housing 2000 chickens, have been devastated.
- Animal Feeds: three families lost about 100 sheep.
- Drinking Water Wells: About 30 drinking water wells have been destroyed.
- Mosques: About 8 mosques are damaged .
- School: One school partially damaged in Zahid Village of Khan Abad district. a Community Based Education (CBE) class is also damaged due to flood in Aliabad, the class was run by Coordination of Afghan Relief and Development (CoAD).
- Infrastructure Damage: The main roads to these villages have been severely damaged by the flood, making access extremely difficult. Urgent repairs are needed to restore accessibility. Additionally, about 40 families are in dire need of emergency tents, as their houses were damaged and are currently unusable in Khan Abad and Ali Abad districts.
- The Families whose houses have been either partially or completely damaged are staying with their relatives. They will remain there until they receive the required assistance or are able to renovate their homes on their own.
- As a common consequence of flooding, AWD cases are expected to rise among affected communities due to the lack of safe drinking water.
- Health Facilities: No reports of damaged health facilities have been received from the affected areas in Kunduz, Baghlan and Balkh provinces.
