Afghanistan: Grape rehabilitation project in Shomali plain

In the period of the conflict for 23 years, Shomali Plain, where is the north of Kabul, was one of the front lines of the war. Shomali Plain once had fertile land for grape trees, but Taliban burned most grape trees.
After Northern Alliance collapsed Taliban, the residents in Shomali Plain started coming back to their own land. UNHCR has helped building their shelters in the area. Now, they need to rebuild their livelihood.

CODE has discussed with the Shura, which is local council, then we have decided to support the rehabilitation of grape trees in Mir Bacha Kot area. First, CODE founded "Grape Fund," giving small loans to 300 families in 4 villages. The families including widows, the disabled, and vulnerable people were chosen by Shura members. They will use the loan for fertilizer, water, and labor costs. After a year, they will return the loans with 5% interests to Grape Fund. This money will be used for other families who need help.

CODE staff gave interviews to some widows who received this fund, and one of them said, "My husband was killed by rocket when he was on the car. I have two daughters. I will make good use of this money for water in our grape garden. My dream is to live normally just like before."
