Highlights

• Since 10 May 2024, more than 59,100 people (8,668 families) have been affected by heavy rainfall and flooding across the northern (11,303), northeastern (23,296) and western (24,064) regions of Afghanistan.

• To date, 225 people have been confirmed killed (137 in the northeastern, 80 in the northern and eight in the western region); more than half of the deaths occurred in Baghlan Province alone. A further 217 people have been wounded.

• Overall, more than 2,800 homes have been destroyed and 4,069 damaged. In the northeastern region, 18 health facilities, 45 public schools and 30 community-based education classes have been damaged or destroyed, as well as basic infrastructure such as roads, bridges, water systems and markets. In the western region, 49 public schools and 113 community-based education classes have been destroyed or damaged. As assessments are ongoing it is possible the number of households and amount and type of infrastructure affected will rise.

• Due to initial road blockages in the northeastern region, the De-facto Authorities (DfA) deployed several military helicopters to affected areas, although access has since improved with routes accessible for light vehicles and road clearance operations ongoing.

• Among the most pressing gaps are limited partner capacity in Ghor Province, the need for longer-term recovery support including shelter repair and rebuilding of homes. • So far in 2024, over 119,160 people have been affected by heavy rainfall and flash flooding across 32 provinces.
