Highlights
- Humanitarian partners are ramping up response efforts following 10 and 11 May heavy rainfall and flash floods in Baghlan, Badakhshan and Takhar provinces that affected more than 60,000 people.
- Across the region to date, approximately 7,800 homes have been confirmed as either destroyed or damaged leaving over 5,000 families displaced according to the Afghan Ministry of Refugee and Repatriation (MoRR). In addition to damage and destruction to roads, bridges, health facilities and public schools, agricultural land and livestock have been lost.
- To date, across the three provinces MoRR reported 347 people were killed and 1,651 injured due to floods. These figures are expected to increase in the days ahead as humanitarian responders are actively engaged in ongoing assessments.
Overview
On 10 and 11 May, heavy rainfall led to fast-flowing water and flash floods in northeastern Afghanistan affecting 23 districts across Baghlan (Baghlan e Jedid, Burka, Dahne Ghori, Doshi, Guzargai Noor, Jelga, Khost, Pul Hesar, Pul e Khumri, Nahrin, and Tala wa Barfak), Badakhshan (Argo, Darayem, Kohistan, Nosai, Tagab, Teshkan, Yawan, Warduj) and Takhar (Bangi, Chall, Farkhar, Ishkamesh, Namakab, and Taloqan) provinces. While several roads and thoroughfares, particularly in Guzargah Noor, Khost, and Jelga districts in Baghlan province, resulting in significant physical access issues. According to the MoRR, nearly 14,000 livestock died and about 24,000 hectors of land have been destroyed across the region
