Afghanistan - Flash floods (IFRC, NOAA Central Asia) (ECHO Daily Flash of 5 May 2026)

  • Very heavy rainfall has been affecting seven provinces of Afghanistan since 24 April, causing flash floods that have resulted in casualties and damage. The affected provinces are Faryab, Badghis, Baghlan, Bamiyan, Badghis, Ghor and Sar-e Pul.
  • The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) reports, as of 5 May, 16 fatalities, two still missing persons, nine injured people and a total of nearly 3 600 affected people across the aforementioned affected provinces. In addition, the IFRC also reports 510 damaged houses (of which a number are completely destroyed) across the affected area. Humanitarian partners have continued scaling up response efforts following rains and floods since late March. Further to the interventions through ongoing actions, ECHO supports the Afghan Red Cross through IFRC’s Disaster Response Emergency Fund (DREF) with EUR 175 000.
  • Over the next 5 days, no rainfall is forecast over most of the country.
