1. DHA/UNOCHA COORDINATOR ISLAMABAD INFORMS THAT ON 31 JANUARY 1996, AN EARTHQUAKE STRUCK THREE REMOTE VILLAGES (PAKHALSOZ, DAR-E-ZANG AND QALA-E-KHWAJA) SOUTHEAST OF MAIMANA, FARYAB PROVINCE. THESE VILLAGES HAD BEEN ALMOST COMPLETELY DESTROYED BY AN EARTHQUAKE THREE YEARS AGO.

2. ON 2 FEBRUARY, STAFF OF IFRC AND THE AFGHAN RED CRESCENT SOCIETY (ARCS) WENT BY HELICOPTER TO TWO OF THE AFFECTED VILLAGES TO MAKE AN INITIAL ASSESSMENT. NO CASUALTIES WERE REPORTED, BUT EXTENSIVE DAMAGE TO HOUSES, PUBLIC BUILDINGS AND MOSQUES. IFRC AND ARCS PROVIDED AFS 30 MILLION (APPROX. USD 5,000) AND 100 BAILS OF SECOND HAND CLOTHING IN ASSISTANCE.

3. ON 3 FEBRUARY, MAZAR-E-SHARIF BASED STAFF FROM UNICEF, WFP AND UNOCHA TRAVELLED BY ROAD TO MAIMANA, WHERE THEY WERE INFORMED BY THE DEPUTY GOVERNOR AND OTHER OFFICIALS THAT ACCESS TO GURZIWAN WAS NOT POSSIBLE DUE TO RECENT HEAVY SNOW FALL. THEY RECEIVED REPORTS THAT 500 FAMILIES HAD BEEN DISPLACED, 500 HOUSES AND 8 MOSQUES DAMAGED AND 150 HOUSES COMPLETELY DESTROYED.

4. RELIEF GOODS PROVIDED BY UNICEF (100 CARTONS OF HIGH PROTEIN BISCUITS, 100 CARTONS OF RICE, 6 ROLLS OF PLASTIC SHEETING, 1,688 BLANKETS, ORS AND ESSENTIAL DRUGS) WERE HANDED OVER TO THE LOCAL AUTHORITIES FOR DISTRIBUTION TO THE EARTHQUAKE VICTIMS. AN ASSESSMENT IS BEING MADE OF ADDITIONAL URGENT NEEDS.
