Project Description: This project supports the disarmament, demobilization and reintegration (DDR) of ex-combatants through the Afghanistan New Beginnings Program. Since the program began in 2004, more than half of the estimated ex-combatants have been decommissioned. More than half the CIDA funds will be used for reintegration, a process that gives 9 months' job training to ex-combatants so that they can earn a living and be productive members of their communities. The DDR process is expected to be complete in 2007.
Project Impact: There is an increase in the number of reintegrated ex-combatants in both rural and urban areas and there is a weakening in the culture of violence.
Project Outcomes: Ex-combatants are reintegrated into civilian life, actively participating in socially constructive employment and other activities.
Project Outputs: 1. Ex-combatants will be successfully trained in agriculture, vocational training/job placement, small business (including micro-credit) & demining. 2. Local capacity will be strengthened through collaboration and competition to deliver services. 3. Public awareness programs will attract ex-combatants to the DDR program.
