Highlights

Food Items: In the second week of June 2025, national average prices of main food commodities shows negligible week-onweek changes. However, on a year-on-year basis, the prices of salt, cooking oil, and rice (Palawi) have increased by 20%, 18%, and 6%, respectively, while prices of other food items have declined. Similarly, compared to the two-year average, most food item prices show a significant decline, except for salt and cooking oil which remain elevated. Additionally, food prices remain considerably higher compared to the same period before the government transition, with the exception of wheat grain, wheat flour, and cooking oil.

Vegetable Items: Vegetable prices continued to decline consecutively since last few weeks with the increase in market supply from local production. Compared to last week, tomato, potato and onion prices have declined by 5.8%, 2.1% and 3.2%, respectively. Similarly, year-on-year and the 2-years average comparisons show a significant decline in prices of vegetable items. Moreover, prices vary significantly across provinces with Tomato prices ranged from 12–50 AFN/kg, Potato from 11–30 AFN/kg, and Onion from 7–30 AFN/kg.

Labour Market and NFIs: The national average labour availability for casual workers stands at 2.2 days of work per week, with the unskilled labour wage averaging AFN 313 per day. Labour availability across the country shows an overall decline due to reduced job opportunities, exacerbating the already high level of unemployment. Prices of non-food items such as fertilizers (DAP and Urea) and improved seeds showed negligible week-on-week changes. Similarly, year-on-year comparisons indicate a slight decline in the prices of DAP and Urea, while the price of concentrate animal feed has slightly increased.

Diesel: The national average diesel price stood at 58.5 AFN per litre during the second week of June 2025, reflecting a slight increase of 2.3% from the previous week but declined by 2% compared to the same time last year. On the global market, the average diesel price stands at $1.18 per litre as of 09 June 2025. However, this price varies significantly among countries.

Provincial level changes: The table presents national average prices, while there are significant variations across provinces. Week-on-week changes in provincial prices show a notable increase in the prices of staple food items in Ghor and Farah provinces, primarily driven by drought and reduced agricultural yields, which have pushed prices higher in local markets.
