Kabul, Afghanistan: The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) will be conducting a 2 day parliamentary technical training workshop to the Environment Commission of the Wolesi Jirga in the City of Kabul on 11 and 13 November 2008. The workshop will be delivered in cooperation with the National Environmental Protection Agency (NEPA) and the USAID-funded Afghanistan Parliamentary Assistance Project (APAP).

The training sessions are intended to build the capacity of the members of the Commission to fulfil their environmental oversight function. Other key issues that will be covered include awareness-raising on environmental issues (including an overview of Afghanistan's 2008 State of Environment Report), discussions on the complementary relationship between environment and Islam, an overview of environmental legislation in the pipeline, and background to the multilateral environmental agreements that the Parliament will be asked to ratify.

Around 20 MPs, most of whom are members of the Environment Commission, will be attending the sessions and a senior official from NEPA will also participate.

This is the first of a series of planned UNEP workshops with the environment and natural resource commissions of the Wolesi Jirga.

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is currently implementing a capacity building and institutional development programme for environmental management in Afghanistan funded by the EC, the Government of Finland and the Global Environment Facility.
