Afghanistan: Border Consortium Emergency Border Operations, 01 to 31 December 2024

The Border Consortium, a coalition of 12 prominent humanitarian organizations, played a vital role in providing crucial humanitarian aid and coordinating the border response throughout the year. The agencies involved include the Danish Refugee Council (DRC), the International Organization for Migration (IOM), Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC), Première Urgence, Save the Children International (SCI), Solidarités International, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the World Food Programme (WFP), and the World Health Organization (WHO).

Over 134,000 individuals have been assisted between 1 January and 31 December 2024, including 97% of the reported 83,245 undocumented returns during the year. The most common intended province of return was Kandahar, followed by Nangarhar, Kabul, Kunduz and Helmand. The majority of undocumented returnees reported to have stayed abroad for over a decade, with 45% having stayed for more than 20 years.
