Afghanistan - Attacks on health facilities (DG ECHO, Partners) (ECHO Daily Flash of 23 May 2019)
- As reported on 14 May, approximately 100 Afghanistan National Security Forces members (ANSF) and a small number of International Forces (IMF) forcefully entered an NGO-run health facility in Ghanzi province, aggressing staff, inquiring about patients and searching the clinic.
- The first quarter of 2019 saw an increase in the number of health facilities and health workers affected by the conflict. 114 medical facilities were attacked in 2019 so far, a stark increase to 2018 when 90 attacks were recorded for the year. Collateral damage is often reported, as are use of health centres for military purposes, the forcing of health workers to provide aid to fighters on the front line and the closure of health facilities, leaving people without care.
