Afghanistan Nutrition Cluster
Context and establishment of nutrition cluster in Afghanistan
The Afghanistan Nutrition Cluster was established in 2008 after the country adopted the IASC Cluster System, following recommendations by the Humanitarian Country Team (HCT) in response to the global food price crisis, which had led to increased food insecurity at the household level in many vulnerable Afghan communities. The main objective of establishing the cluster system in the country was to strengthen humanitarian coordination and ensure a predictable and accountable nutrition response, in line with the humanitarian reform initiated in 2005. Since then, the Nutrition Cluster has evolved, providing more comprehensive guidance on nutrition responses to both man-made and natural hazards that the country continuously faces. The Afghanistan Nutrition Cluster has clearly defined Terms of Reference and guidelines/protocols that guide the nutrition response and are endorsed by the government. The Nutrition Cluster membership is composed of PND/MoPH, NNGOs, INGOs, UN agencies, civil society, donors, and observers.
