EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

This UN Strategic Framework (UNSF) sets out the agreed priorities for the UN's country-level work in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) over the five year period 2017-2021. It replaces the previous framework, which covered the period 2011-2016. It has been agreed and co-signed by both the Government and the UN's Country Team, led by the Resident Coordinator. All parties have committed to implementing the provisions of the Strategic Framework in good faith.

Funding

The HCT is seeking US$28.9 million to provide immediate humanitarian assistance to 600,000 people in food security, nutrition, shelter, health, and water, sanitation and hygiene for the next six months.

Situation Overview

The remnants of Typhoon Lionrock passed DPRK on 29 August 2016, merging with a low pressure front. Over the three days, 208 mm of rain deluged Hoeryong City. Between 30-31 August, the Tumen River rose 6-12 metres, breaking its banks.

(Bangkok/New York, 8 April 2015) The United Nations urgently needs US$111 million to fund its humanitarian operations in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DRPK) in 2015. The fund will support humanitarian activities in food and agriculture, health and nutrition, water and sanitation. The UN recently updated its plans to address these critical humanitarian needs which remain drastically underfunded.
