Situation Report

The Government of Sri Lanka's (GoSL) military offensive in the Mannar District has caused a series of displacements of civilians from the areas of Pandivirichchaan, Adampan, Andankulam and other areas starting on August 25, 2007.

a. Situation Report

- KDRRO gave Rs 20,000 (US$ 200) to 05 beneficiaries, Rs. 4000 (US$ 40) each, engaged in poultry husbandry in Vivehananthanagar on 03 March 2008.

- KDRRO held a meeting on 05 March 2008 in Vivehananthanagar with farmers concerning an agriculture project.

Tamils Rehabilitation Organization(TRO) condemns, in the strongest possible terms, the gruesome, terrorist attack by a Sri Lanka Army (SLA) Deep Penetration Unit (DPU) on a civilian bus travelling to Paalampiddifrom Madhuat 2:25 on 29 November 2008. The attack killed 20 people, 11 of whom school children, and injured 14, eight of whom were children.

Tamils Rehabilitation Organization (TRO) offices today took time to pay their respects and remember the 7 TRO humanitarian workers who were abducted on 29 and 30 January 2006 while traveling through the Welikanda area in the Government of Sri Lanka (GoSL) controlled Polonaruwa District.

Paramilitary forces allied to and working in conjunction with the GoSL abducted the 7 TRO workers (6 men and one woman) tortured them, raping the woman, and then executed and disposed of their bodies. The bodies have never been found.

Introduction

Asian Tsunami - no one expected - even modern science has not predicted this catastrophic natural phenomenon - It destroyed everything on its path in the Eastern, western and Southern coastal areas of Sri Lanka.

Most affected areas are NorthEast of Sri Lanka. The (Percentage) ratio of the destruction by Tsunami in Sri Lanka is thus: South 26% West 10% and NorthEast 64%.

TRO immediately - within half an hour got into rescue operation when Tsunami struck in the NorthEast. 20 years experience TRO has got helped immensely in its Tsunami humanitarian work.
