Current Vanuatu Volcano Alert Level: Level 4
Volcanic activity at Ambae is continuing to increase. The Alert Level for Ambae volcano is raised from Level 3 to Level 4 .
This means that the Ambae volcano is in a moderate eruption state . At this Alert Level, the volcanic activity is likely to continue to increase or decrease to its normal level of unrest at any time. Danger is in the Red, Grey, Orange and White dotted Zones (See map below).
Water projects completed by the IRCCNH (Increasing Resilience to Climate Change and Natural Hazards) project through the Ministry of Climate Change were handed over to communities of Tanna and Tongoa by the Honourable Minister of Climate Change, Ham Lini Vanuaroroa, from August 22-23.
Over 2,500 people will benefit from increased access to safe water owing to the installation of five rain harvesting systems on Tanna, benefiting an estimated 1,800 people, while an estimated 1,700 people will benefit from three gravity-fed water systems on Tongoa.
The chiefs and people of West Coast Santo have commenced the West Coast Santo “Sunset” Environment Network, a historical commitment by all of the remote villages along Santo’s rugged West Coast to manage and protect natural resources for sustainable and resilient livelihoods.
Epi is the latest island to be provided climate proof buildings for the use of government departments and communities. The construction of the building is part of a UNDP-supported, GEF-LDCF funded project, **_"Vanuatu Coastal Adaptation Project (VCAP),"_** which is working to build resilience through improved infrastructure, sustained livelihoods, and increased food production.
The National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) though the Ministry of Climate Change continues to strengthen Vanuatu capacity in Emergency Operations against catastrophic events in our Provinces. Beginning June this year, The European Union through the Secretariat of the Pacific Communities (SPC) initiates a project to fund 3 Provincial Emergency Operational Centres under NDMO for coordinating activities before, during and after disasters in Santo-Luganiville (Sanma Province), Lakatoro (Malampa Province) and Saratamata-East Ambae (Penama Province).
