On 31 August 2017, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs hosted the signing of an agreement between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Welfare, the Ministry of Health and the Latvian Red Cross on cooperation in providing medical treatment and rehabilitation in Latvia in 2017 to persons who have been injured in hostilities in Ukraine. Under the Cabinet of Ministers Decree of 25 April 2017, EUR 34 000 will be allocated from the State Budget Programme “Emergency Funds” towards the medical treatment of Ukrainian soldiers.

On 16 August, the Cabinet of Ministers supported a draft decree prepared by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, “On the allocation of funding to Afghanistan from the national budget programme “Funds for Unforeseen Events””. The decision is meaningful in light of preparations for the conference on Afghanistan upcoming 4 and 5 October in Brussels. During the conference the Member States are expected to affirm their commitment to the development of Afghanistan by making pledges on their further political and financial support.

On 3 May, the Latvian Cabinet of Ministers approved the allocation of 175,000 euros in support of reforms in Ukraine and the medical treatment and rehabilitation in Latvia for persons who have been injured in hostilities in Ukraine, and supported in principle an increase in the number of Latvia’s civilian experts participating in international missions in Ukraine.

The basis of this decision is the letter received from the European Commission Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection department director–general Klaus Sorensen with the appeal to give humanitarian assistance for Ukraine.
