Focus of the Case study
Building on the Frontline Survey and the learning from local action, Action for Sustainable Change (AFOSC) Kenya led multiple-pronged advocacy efforts at the national, county and community levels that brought together interested stakeholders in advancing local action to counter and mitigate the negative impacts of three prioritised disaster threats. The case study demonstrates the impact of collective action, driven by evidence-based advocacy, at different levels from the community, county to the national level.
The Urban ARK Programme hosted an international conference in Lilongwe, Malawi from 1st to 3rd February 2016. The conference was supported by DFID-ESRC and hosted by Mzuzu University an Urban ARK Partner. The conference brought together urban researchers and practitioners engaged in African disaster risk reduction and management. Global Network of Civil Society Organizations for Disaster Reduction (GNDR) was represented by Maynard Nyirenda, Executive Director of Sustainable Rural Growth and Development Initiative (SRGDI), and a member of GNDR in Southern Africa.
Has the Philippines learnt from Typhoon Haiyan in 2013? Was the country prepared for Typhoon Koppu? Thousands of lives have been saved this time, compared to Haiyan, but individuals need to collaborate to reach a zero casualty target. And while the media praise the relatively low numbers of lives lost, there is little mention of the huge impact Koppu has brought on livelihoods.
