One of the biggest biometric verification processes ever undertaken has confirmed that Uganda is hosting 1.1 million refugees, by far the largest number in Africa and the third largest worldwide. With the scale of the crisis now confirmed, the international community should ensure the response is appropriately funded. As the end of the year approaches, the 2018 response plan has received just 42% of the required funds.

The joint logistics unit of the Finnish and Danish Red Cross organisations left Copenhagen for the disaster area in Indonesia today.

After earthquakes and a tsunami hit the Sulawesi region, more than 70,000 people have been forced to leave their homes. Thousands have been killed or injured.

Roads, bridges and other infrastructure have also been destroyed in the disaster, which makes it harder for aid workers to reach those in need.

This is where experts in aid work logistics come in.

The Finnish Red Cross is donating EUR 100,000 from its Disaster Relief Fund for humanitarian aid in Ethiopia. In addition to the acts of inter-communal violence that escalated in June, the people of Ethiopia suffer from malnutrition and lack of clean water in Kochere and in the Gedeo Zone.

The violence in West Guji and the Gedeo Zone in the southern parts of Ethiopia, which escalated in June, have displaced more than 820,000 people to date.

The Finnish Red Cross continues to close down reception units. The reception centres of Kitee and Kotka will be closed at the end of June, in accordance with the plans of the Finnish Immigration Service. Starting from July 2018, 21 reception units for adults and families and three units for children maintained by the Red Cross will remain. These have a total of 3,500 residents.
